So, you've heard the buzz about the incredible deal on Temu Mahjong Mats, huh? You're thinking, "Score! I can finally upgrade my game night setup without breaking the bank!" But hold your tiles, folks, because there's a twist to this bargain bonanza that's worth a closer look.

Picture this: you stumble upon a jaw-dropping sale offering Temu Mahjong Mats at a fraction of the original price. Your wallet does a little happy dance, and you can already envision the envy in your friends' eyes as you lay down these sleek, mats for your next mahjong marathon.

But at What Cost to the Original Creator?

Here's where things get a tad tricky. While you're busy celebrating your savvy shopping skills, spare a thought for the original creator of these mats. They poured their heart and soul into designing a top-notch product, only to see it sold at a steep discount that may not benefit them in the long run.

Supporting Creativity and Innovation

When we snag a deal that seems too good to be true, it's essential to consider the bigger picture. Supporting creators and innovators not only ensures a steady stream of unique products but also encourages a culture of creativity that benefits us all in the long haul.

So, What's the Verdict?

While the allure of a bargain is undeniable, it's worth pausing to reflect on the true cost of that steal. By supporting original creators and their work, we contribute to a vibrant ecosystem of innovation and inspiration that enriches our lives in ways we may not even realize.

So, the next time you spot those tempting Temu Mahjong Mats at a fraction of the price, remember the creative minds behind them and consider the value of supporting their hard work. After all, a good deal is great, but supporting creativity? Now, that's priceless.

When Community Is Undercut: The Cost of Temu’s Theft of Original Creative Work

Mahjong has always been more than a game. It is ritual, heritage, friendship, and community. For many of us, it is also art.

Independent creators spend countless hours designing Mahjong mats that are thoughtful, culturally inspired, and deeply personal. Every color choice, pattern, and motif is intentional. These designs are born from lived experience, community conversations, late nights, and a genuine love for the game and the people who play it.

And yet, that work is being stolen.

Platforms like Temu are using AI-generated tools to scrape, mimic, and reproduce original Mahjong mat designs created by independent artists—then mass-producing and reselling them at a fraction of the cost. These knockoffs are not “inspired by” original work. They are direct imitations. The result is devastating.

I have personally seen my original designs appear on Temu without permission, credit, or compensation. I have watched members of Mahjong groups proudly show off their “new mat,” only for me to recognize it immediately as my own work. In that moment, I don’t just lose a sale—I lose a relationship. I lose a chance to connect with someone who might have become a returning customer, a supporter, a part of the community that small creators work so hard to build.

Temu’s reporting process only compounds the harm. While they claim to offer intellectual property protections, the reality is far different. The reporting system is lengthy, glitchy, and frequently crashes mid-report, forcing you to start over. After repeated attempts, it becomes clear how discouraging the process is—and it’s difficult not to feel that this friction is intentional. When creators give up out of exhaustion, the stolen products remain live and profitable.

This isn’t just about Mahjong mats.

The same thing is happening to wall art, crochet patterns, handmade goods, and countless other creative works from small businesses. AI tools are being used not to innovate, but to exploit—feeding on original human creativity and stripping it of livelihood and recognition. In some cases the original designers photography and displays have even been taken to list on the platform without credit, or permission.

What makes this especially painful is that Temu can never replicate what independent creators offer beyond the product itself.

They cannot provide the customer service that comes from knowing your buyers by name.

They cannot foster the sense of belonging that exists within Mahjong communities.

They cannot replace the trust, conversation, and care that comes from buying directly from someone who loves what they do.

When you purchase from a small creator, you are supporting artistry, culture, and connection. When you purchase from Temu, you are often unknowingly supporting theft.

If this continues unchecked, it threatens the very existence of independent creative businesses. It discourages artists from creating. It erodes trust. And it hollowly replaces community with convenience.

This issue extends far beyond a single creator or design.

While reviewing listings available on the Temu website, I identified approximately well over 60 products that closely resemble my original Mahjong mat designs. Afterall I do have over 200 Mahjong Mat designs, so I had to stop looking due to the distress it was causing. In my professional judgment as the original artist, these designs appear substantially similar to my work and were not authorized by me.

These listings do not appear to be limited to Splash of Color Co. During the same review, I observed products that strongly resemble the work of many other independent designers and creators across multiple creative categories. This suggests a broader pattern that affects far more than one business or one individual.

To be clear, my intention is not to make legal conclusions, but to share my lived experience as an independent creator navigating an increasingly complex digital marketplace. When original designs appear to be reproduced and sold at significantly lower prices without clear attribution or authorization, it directly impacts small businesses that rely on trust, originality, and community connection.

Temu cannot offer the personal relationships, customer support, or sense of community that define Mahjong culture and sustain independent creators. That value comes from human connection, not mass production.

I encourage consumers to be mindful of where products originate and to support original artists whenever possible. Choosing to buy directly from creators helps preserve creativity, culture, and the communities that make this work meaningful.

IMahjong is about community. Let’s protect the people who help build it.

Do not purchase from Temu. Stand with creators.
